Hard Lock Specializations and Balance

    Destroyer is definitely good. But Mage/hybrid is just more versatile, and often has less to lose.

    I would love to see a different balancing of play styles than the current options. I think it could be made better than it is.

    Work on content that will actually retain newer players for longer than 3 weeks. Thanks!

    Also, I'm tired of explaining to new players that they need to press "ESC" to move. A real tutorial would be great!

    can we not debat about adding more specialisations instead of removing and or adjusting them..

    We are running out of time..

    How about this?

    Add some sort of healing spec :

    - unlocks banner placements.. aeo buffs
    - unlocks grouphealing? groups buffing?

    indestructable:

    increase protections by 150%

    decrease dmg out put by 50%

    Launch date is the most curial part of darkfall, without the decent patches stuff like

    - interactive map
    - content
    - addressing the downtime.
    - anti bankstaring

    and so forth..

    Christ.. ill say it again.. you guys are so full of yourself.. regarding marketing and population - things will come and so forth..

    no offense tho.

    but seeing the members here on the forums.. it is not really gonna cut it to keep darkfall alive.

    @kilrain What are the current plans for this topic? Have you gained enough community feedback yet to make a decision? I'd like to start this discussion up again, perhaps in a new thread, once we have a clear direction. Working on specializations as a community would be lots of fun.

    removing destro forces the the meta, meta is boring, boring is video game death.

    you want a high population, but guess what, the majority in that high population do not want to have to learn 1000 spells AND their mechanics/cooldown and know exactly when to use them, some do want that(not enough to keep a thriving pop), MOST do not,most want roles. that is weather you like it or not, the reason people do not flock to this game. there are no fun ways to make your character different from another.

    this game is made to be player driven which is fantastic but sucks without a population. Please get the new robes and armors in before launch, make them have interesting attributes that effect different playstyles. quick examples that required no thought: (a heavy armor set that lowers all damage but increases healing/casting time of heals/crossheals) a medium armor that makes you silent at all times and increases dagger damage/reach but blocks ALL magic) maybe an airmagic robe set that makes you fly higher with things like stormblast. its so easy to come up with fun things. DO SOMETHING FUN . give us time to create videos using these armors.make them look interesting. add cloaks. all the current videos of people in infernal/bone/ nakid is total uglyboringaids. if you disagree with these simple suggestions i have to ask why mmorpg is used to describe this game at all. every mmorpg i have ever played has had classes or roles to choose from.

    Darkfall is a Meta Playing Game i guess. not a Role Playing Game. this means is cannot be a Massive Multiplayer online game because low pop. why not put in the new launch trailer Darkfall: Rise of Agon is the BMOMPG you have been waiting for! Bearly Multiplayer Online MetaPlaying Game.

    honestly tho the current gear graphic should be sorta fazed out. people complain about the name "darkfall" still being attached to this game, as if that is what deters people when they SEE a video. i say nah, its the fact that every video looks the same because everyone looks the same and fights the same, so as a newcomer to DF how are you supposed to know what you are looking at ? how can you see a story of the battle unfold or care about it in the chaos that is everyone looking and fighting the same.

    They said that you won't be forced to use advanced magic, things will just be different, and likely a lot better.

    Didn't read everything that was said in this thread, but I'll just say I kinda like the hard locks. I just think those specializations should also give you something else if they remove something. Example, instead of a flat damage buff (or in addition to), destroyers could also get new abilities. Same for mage killer.

    As long as you have the option to play with everything, I don't mind having specializations that would lock out a magic school while empowering the opposite school, for example.

    I love playing as an archer but wearing light gear to give the archer an advantage can also in return greatly hurt, as mage spells can just be close and do about the same damage and rays are insta cast doing more damage, only thing I liked about the hard lock's was being able to do a little more damage to staff users so any kind of work to remove hard lock and still give archers a fair shake I am totally down for testing out.

    Specialization could be like this :

    No more hard lock

    Bonus to melee damage and melee protection , you lose % of your arrow/magic protection.

    Bonus to archery damage and archery protection, you lose % of your melee/magic protection.

    Bonus to a magic school and protection from that school, you lose % of your archery/melee/opposite school protection.

    No CD on changing specialization but casting as long as binding a rune.

    The problem with things like 'bonus to X damage', especially when paired with protection reductions is that it then makes the TTKs (stands for Time to Kill) faster. We do not want faster TTKs. Faster TTKs have many downsides. Less chances for counter play and 'come backs', Combat that devolves into DPS races with no stating, more powerful nakeds/scroachers and a 'cheesier' feel to combat especially group combat where even minor changes can stack up many times over to make huge differences. Also one of the most entertaining and fun aspects of the combat is the transitions in and out of melee. You never want to make ranged or melee strong enough to stand completely on their own. You never want to design it so that a 'mage' never wants to ever pull a melee wep, or a 'warrior' never wants to pull a bow'. It should always be necessary for a melee player to pull ranged and a ranged player to pull melee in order to play at anything above low levels. Its a big part of what gives the combat in DFO so much depth.

    A mage can play now without ever having to use melee and other than using a shield I feel like an archer should be able to do the same

    It isn't easy, especially at high levels but it can be done. Thing is if they are pressuring you at all, you have to show your back and potentially give up back shots to maintain that range. This is just 1v1 as well. In (evenly matched) group fights its pretty much impossible to completely stay ranged unless your opponents are choosing to not melee. The bigger the fight, the easier it is to catch someone looking the wrong direction with melee.

    In fights where a piece of territory matters like defending a siege stone things get even harder since ranged has to give up ground to stay ranged. Fighting on a boat is another extreme where ranged isn't nearly as useful.

    haha ur post is all messed up. So messed up it even messed up my quote. If the fire staff guy was fighting people like rex or obeesho those are people that will never melee if given the choice. It depends a lot on who you are fighting and if they even want to melee.

    Ok to try this again, I do not think anyone should be forced into a certain play style and should have the freedom to not use melee if they choose not to use it, I agree their are many occasions where it makes more sense but still one should not feel forced to do so.     You can also be hybrid if ya want. Those options are there if you want to be glass canon in something specific. It's up to you if you wanna specialize in something or not but get weaker in something else if you choose to be.
