Player Retention

    Whats been done about player retention? Population has always been a huge issue for DF. I haven't followed ROA as closely as I wish I had, so I'm wondering whats different with ROA that will keep people playing for years?

    They are finally starting to add some real end game content like the champ spawns Hopefully they add some other types of events to do

    At the moment nothing really has been added to the game to keep you interested besides normal pvp. Holdings are arguably less worth while to own.

    I give it a month maybe two tops before decreased population hits in due to lack of stuff besides pvp (IMO).

    Yeah, I've been catching up on patch notes..seems like they've been working on this kind of stuff.....I just remember all the bank staring, log in and friendly duel, can't ever find a fight in the world so why leave the city mentalities that killed this game :| .... thats pretty much the 'end game' of DF1

    For me it's the consistent patches and updates + all the pve/economy changes

    I think if they implement the Hellgate concept from Albion Online it would go a long way to providing content for the "sheep"

    I think adding a more active gathering system like the current survival games out there (like manually swinging your pickaxe at the rock) as well as adding in more environment and world interaction (like Breath of the Wild) would go a loooong way to making the crafting/gathering/travel more fun and satisfying. More free-spawning stuff like mushrooms is a great start :)

    What does changing harvesting to having to hold down LMB(with the new autoswing) actually do? Do you get resources faster as a compromise? Or does it just become more infuriating?

    You ever play reign of kings? Right from the start it was literally fun to just swing at trees and rocks because gathering was satisfying. In comparison, in Darkfall gathering is one of the last things I would ever want to do because it is incredibly boring and not satisfying at all

    Devs have at least said that they understand that without regular content patches they wont keep sustained population. They've also said they are planning on doing monthly patches. Now whether they acutally get one patch a month or whether the patchs contain any substantial content we'll have to wait and see.

    This yes. Its not perfect yet in albion but it is a way to have high risk, high reward pve with a decent chance of a straight 5v5 fight. I was thinkin about this the other day and I think 5v5 may even been a bit too much for DF. Maybe the DF hellgates would be 3 person teams?

    To exaplin this system to anyone who hasnt played albion. Basically out in the world mini boss mobs spawn and show up on the map. You get group of 5 people, kill boss and gate spawns. Gate only lets in your 5 man party and leads to an instanced dungeon with lucrative PvE. If someone somewhere else in the world kills a different gate boss they enter a gate that leads to the same dungeon the first group of 5 went in. Leading to both sides needing to fight to the death to finish the dungeon (hard to run since exit has darkfall-esk timers).

    This sounds kind of interesting.

    Does both parties spawn in at the same location. So, if team 1 gets there 5 minutes earlier than team 2, team 1 will most likelyget sandwiched between the mobs and team 2?

    Would be cool if both teams spawn at opposite, but equal locations and they both work towards the center "boss room" and the only exit. Might be able to have each team race to clear their side faster and get out with the boss loot, and still allow for a winner takes all showdown.

    Currently it is like how you said, a boss in the middle with two wings. One group comes in to the left wing, the other to the right wing. You can leave from where you came in from but it takes a while to zone out.

    They are soon changing it to be a center boss with random spawn in points near the middle boss, but the middle boss only spawns after killing 4 mini bosses located in 4 corners outward from the center. They are changing it becuase with the current system mobs mess up fights sometimes. The new system will basically be an arena.

    You mean the spawns that twenty people cant out DPS because of regen? Or the one that does a whirlwind for 250 damage twice in five seconds. Also maybe your talking about the instant server crashes when fighting them.

    You know they're working on rebalancing the champions. Also, the server shit is obviously being fixed too. Chill out kid.

    going to be impossible to keep new players. here is why.

    new player installs darkfall

    new player learns there is only 1 class (the meta)

    new player if smart uninstalls , if dumb grinds every ability in the meta, joins a guild , duels all day , does a siege or 2 , duels some more and uninstalls.

    everyone using the same abilities is boring aids and if you say so the last 100 people or less still playing this game tell you fuck off while you just roll your eyes and watch as their game dies again.

    Champion spawns working or not has nothing to do with the real problem holding darkfall back

    Player retention is all about incentive, reason and motivation to keep logging in daily, weekly or monthly. Daily players will be the bread and butter driving daily action, weekly players will log on for sieges or clan events and monthly players will be the guys that keep checking in on the game for patches and sometimes clan stuff. We can appeal to all of them and already have in a few ways.

    New player retention however is a different kettle of fish. These guys come to the game ready to dismiss it at a moments notice. They are unforgiving and fragile little creatures that need some guidance to begin. If we can make their first few hours really fun, rewarding and engaging then they will more likely stick around. They need to be sold on the game on their first time and right now whacking a few goblins with a one hander with no direction to go just doesn't cut it. Newbs aren't interested in amassing wealth or levelling when they don't see the point, so all of their efforts will seem pointless unless given a general direction to head in. Once they are reborn into Darkfall and had a little time to adjust, then you throw them in the deep end and hopefully they learned to swim.
