Curious to see what refresh rate monitors people use. There's no denying it has a significant impact on a players performance in FPS games so let's see how serious you guys are.

    Big impact, diminishing returns.

I find it hard to imagine a benefit above 144.

The HTC Vive VR headset has a 90hz display. At 90hz (which = 90 fps max) you have a smooth world that moves with your head with no jitter. 60hz in VR has noticable jitter. I think that 50 percent leap above 60hz is where the biggest gain lies.

pretty much what obeesho said, playing above 60 makes it better and more comfortable specially, but it isn't a suuuuper big deal plus the benefits quickly go down as hz go up

played at 120 and 144 and its hard to notice any difference

I still using a 120hz TN early Benq model from 2010/2011 it's absolutely dogshit at viewing angles and colors but the refresh rate and size increase over the Viewsonic 19 inch 70hz refresh panel I used for the first 2 years of DF1 made a huge jump in what I could do in PvP.

ATM I'm waiting for the zero compromise (IMHO) LG 27 inch 240hz 1080p Nano-IPS (with even further lowered response times, quality control, and backlight bleed than the AUO panel in current 144hz high refresh rate IPS monitors like the Asus PG279Q) monitor at the end of this year

I encourage anyone thinking about buying a new monitor for fast paced games like Darkfall/ Star Citizen to wait for it, as its going to give you vastly better colors and viewing angles than the top TN panels and be almost as fast (to the point where IPS is basically imperceptible input lag/response time compared to TN)

I have a 240hz and the difference from 144hz is as substantial as going from 60 to 144hz.

144hz here. Not that it helps at all in sieges where I'm down to 30 fps with tons of hitching and micro stutters that aren't directly reflected by the fps counter. For outside of siege stuff and games that aren't so poorly optimized it's nice though. I don't think I could ever go back to 60hz anymore.

Yes, animation is a sequence of still images strung together to give the illusion of motion.

    That is true.

The question, though, isn't what a high speed camera can detect. The question is what the human eye/brain can detect.

I will modify my opinion slightly to: skeptical but open minded .

Used 60hz until two weeks ago. It’s like playing a different game

Unless you have poor eyesight then the human eye and brain can absolutely detect higher frame rates. We don't see in frames. The difference between 60hz and 144hz is obvious to nearly everybody that has seen it in person. However, while I haven't seen a 240hz monitor, the difference is noticeable if you know what to look for and the benefits will only apply to those who have fast reaction times to begin with.

Here's quick demonstration to see the difference. If you have a 144hz monitor move your cursor around quickly in a circle and notice how there's a trail of individual cursors. Change your refresh rate to 60 (or use your 2nd monitor) and notice how there are fewer cursors being displayed. If you can't see it your eyes are shitty.

In Darkfall it results in way better tracking of targets and more accurate hitbox placement. I notice it the most when I knock people up or track people with erratic movements.

Let's think about this from a different angle:

Is there a maximum framerate/refresh rate above which there is no perceptible difference for the purpose of performance while playing a game.

How would you determine what that maximum is?

I can tell you two ways you wouldn't tell...

    1. High speed camera zoomed in and slow motioned

    2. The number of cursor trails visible while spazzing your mouse around

I am sorry but I think the plot is being missed here. It like saying more horsepower is always better on a motorcycle. It's a truth at first, but then there comes a point where any more just isn't usable.

It's not what you see, it's how fast you see it.
Also human eyes don't see things in frames, it's a blurry smearing of visual data. The more reference points you have, the better.

Obviously the returns are diminishing, both in terms of latency and in terms of how much extra data we're perceiving, but we don't know the latter.
