Most players just look at the graphics first, they have no idea how good the gameplay is, so that's what they'll see. So you can forget about rapidly. Then a few will login, will try to figure the game out, some will get lost and give up, some will stay. These will be mostly stomped and will quit. It has happened so many times in the past with DF's various iterations that it's common knowledge by now. Just check the various videos about df on youtube by promoters...

It's mostly the graphics, no matter how much DF vets deny it. New players don't know the game, they just see ugly stuff. NPE is actually decent. Every game has losses from new players that can't figure it out and leave. But a beautiful game has good chances of keeping them for a bit longer

they're improving them already, textures ect, but they can't upgrade them to more modern TYPE of graphics cause that's way too expensive

 

What would they sell an empty a box? Computers don't come with DVD players anymore plus it's hugely expensive to package DVDs and distribute. They haven't done a Steam release because Steam wants to much money. Stores cater to the consoles games, and Steam has 75% of the PC game market and the are digital downloads. A good start: optimize the shadows. In order to have them in game without having the possibility to disable them. It would be a big step forward for the graphics (now the game is very flat), for the streamers and it would be an extra strategic element.
