Before I say anything I know I'm going to get a ton of flack for this, but fuck it I think I'm right when saying it.

I think having a server in NY is bad and here is why:

EU players are going to collectively lose roughly ~20-30 ping. They should get around 120 ping to 140.

West Coast Players ( Hawaii, Cali, Oregon, Washington ETC ) are going to gain roughly 35-40 Ping. West Coast will be playing at 110-120

In DFO I played at 75 Ping when connecting to Chicago. I'm now going to be playing at 110-115 Ping when connecting to a NY server. If you're curious why I'm gaining so much it's because the infrastructure on the west coast is fucking atrocious, straight up it's bad. Not to mention we are heavily monopolized over here by TW and AT&T who could give a fuck about their consumers.

EU players are not going to benefit much at all from this server change and west coast are only going to be getting ass pounded for it. Why are we diverting from Chicago? It worked so well and not to mention most of the consumers are from NA.

Is there an ip we can ping to test how much latency we are going to have? I am in southern California 45 minutes from the literal west coast and I believe I still get under 100 ping to New York gameservers.

Yes, use pingtest.net. You should ping around 90-100. Add another 8-10 ping to this and that should be your ping. I'm not an expert in this field but from own experience and after using multiple ISP's this is how I've measured my ping.

We currently do not have our host's IP but it will be available soon.

We have conducted our own tests with a host in NY which didn't pan out as they did not have the powerful enough servers.

But here's one of the reasons why we chose NY:

    http://www.submarinecablemap.com/

All of the underwater sea cables exit in New York and New Jersey. If we went to Chicago, we would be exiting in New York then have to traverse land cables before finally getting to our location.

If you are worried about ping to New York, please feel free to ping: 107.191.96.26 (FIXED). If you are experiencing >90 ping from NA please give me the "pathping" output as I have done below:

This will spit out statistics after 375 seconds (6.25 minutes), which will give you a longer term average of any bottlenecks between you and the server.

This IP I am having you test against is located in NY (Please refer to: https://www.iplocation.net/ to check)

If any other questions or concerns are brought up, please let me know.

    Thanks,
    Rawr

NY is the best location for a worldwide server. Most EU players will get around 100 ping. When we were testing I got some friends to ping a NY server and we were all getting around 100 ping or less. I was even getting 85 from Ireland and some UK people 80 since that's where the cables go to NY from.

Try pinging this IP and post results here: 107.191.96.26

The IP posted above is for a cloud server so the ping would be higher than we expect to NY.

Out of curiosity, what does this kind of thing tell you?

Yes I even get sub 90 ping to that NY server which is what I had to the EU server when I lived in the countryside. I would be very happy with that or anything sub 100.

NY is the best option, Chicago is a no go for eastern/scandinavian EU players(DFO told us that).

im getting 88 ping to 107.191.96.26
So while id like my ping to be <50, anything under 100-120 is fine to play with.

A serious question though, arent the australian players going to be...how to put this lightly...fucked?
The west coast server, which DFO had i think, gave them around 160 ping.
This is easily going to add another 50-100 to that.

Did you ping the IP quoted below?

    Where are you located?

This is not our IP but it's a similar infrastructure to what we will have.

The main problem is that you cant please EU, NA and Oceanic players with one server, its often why they have their own servers over there. Sure you can put it west coast, that will mean 200-300 ping for eastern/scandinavian EU'ers(of which there were many in DFO). I was getting 150-160 myself to the west server DFO once had, getting 85 to this one. I doubt you'll have a lot of EU players join if they have to play with 200 ping+, I know I wouldnt.

    Yup, I pinged that one.

I'm currently in Riga, used to play DFO from Norway. Overall, my ping should be better from my current location than it was back home.

If we have a decent chunk of AU players I'd love to talk to them, but we're going by data from DF1 we have.. majority NA, and other chunk EU. AU players can talk to us and we'll see what we can do

I would think that the infrastructure in Norway is better and the ping would actually be better from there unfortunately for you :D

UK is the best ping you could get to NY, could be as low as 80
