The harsh reality that BPG knew nothing about their playerbase

    You are very mistaken if you think there is no grind.

    Skill grind wasnt a big deal? Maybe if that was the only grind yes.
    Gear grind wasnt a big deal? Maybe if that was the only grind yes.
    PvP Skill / learning the game grind combined with the two others, makes a very very massive grind in the game and it discourages new players.

    What new player is gonna go farm gear, if they just die due to; their skills are under leveled, they're just not skilled enough and vice versa.

    I feel you might be a little uninformed about the game truthfully. These are good steps, they're just late.

    Exactly why I said keep the racial war in, while adding more incentives to be blue. Meaningful PvP between enemies will give the game longevity. Rather than killing every person you come across because you're bored and there's really no reason not to when you can have all the benefits of being blue by using an alt.

    The only people this applies to is like the top 25 players. If that. The rest of these top/vet players are not interested in fair fights or seeing who's better, they are interested in W's. You can clearly see this by every single PvP/Vet player clan allying up recently and not bothering to fight each other.

    The game failed with grind before so let's try something different.. kids always complaining because they want to have the advantage for having no life outside of a video game.

    People are complaining because with this change we will have maxed toons bank staring. Timerfall isn't consistent enough and too far to travel. Holdings are not worth sieging. 100 vets will return into the same 2 clans and steamroll everyone else for a few days and it will be done.

    It's step 1 homie.

    Step 2 should be the hotspots, village timer/loottable changes, mob loot increased, arena addition, more fast travel options, we'll see though.

    Wish I could like this post more. So many contradictions from people. I guarantee if you superimposed WoWs arena system on this game people would end up loving it. That's basically exactly what dueling is without any ranking system or formality. Add something like the top 5 rated people get a special house bind somewhere, youd see these vets logging in a lot more.

    Front Loading was a seemingly good idea but it failed. The PERCEPTION of a power gap is even more important than the power gap itself, and Front Loading fails to improve that perception. If you tell a new player "Grind isn't bad because 50 is actually 75" he'll just get a confused look on his face and say "Yah but I'm only at 50". It would have been much, much better to simply increase gains so that 75 was achieved more quickly: at the same rate that "50 but it's actually 75" is currently achieved.

    Long story short: shit copied from DND (e.g. Front Loading) ended up sucking. Stuff that BPG developed themselves was good.

    Why is it either or?

    If there's no grind, then nobody would care about getting PKed (see Call of Duty)

    If there's no possibility of getting PKed and losing stuff, people wouldn't care about grind as much (see WoW)

    There has to be a balance.
    • Limited safe zones, or at least "safe-ish" areas where it is risky, costly, difficult, and almost completely pointless for reds to gank new players.
    • A quick level up to PVP-viability, with a long tail from there to PVP-perfection.
    • Shit to do, like impromptu PVP mechanics that don't depend on timers or arenas.

    Its been funny to watch these forums and the same mistakes being made. Everyone cried for darkfall 1 back and this one died faster than than all the rest. How sad.

    It wasn't that the grind is long. It's that the grind isn't FUN. To make a grind fun takes a LOT of work. Like a AAA budget kind of work.

    grind is long n not fun, shooting 250 bolts at level 90 magic school to get 1-2 levels isnt fun.

    The even sadder thing is that this one was far better than all the rest, and still died in 2 months, to a horrible abortion of a game that offers nothing that this game doesn't offer, except safe zones.

    I think the problem is the exact opposite. They knew the player base and catered to that player base. The problem being that the amount of those players is unsustainable and small. These are the people who have stuck with Darkfall over the years. As long as the game exists they will be here.

    Whether you add more features and content they would still be playing. It's pointless to try and appeal to people who've already gone through the ringer and have held on this long. The younger audience of gamer are a different breed who want instant gratification and Darkfall was never intended to be a game for that type of gamer. Even if you try and cater to that type of gamer they will never stick with Darkfall. It was a product developed by old players of Asherons Call and Ultima Online who felt there wasn't a game that lived up to the experience which those game provided in the current market.

    The game failed because it only provided 1/2 of the recipe of the titles above. both AC and UO had compelling PVE, quests, lore and progression systems to maintain two types of play styles allowing the game to reach a wider demographic of that particular niche of gamer. I'm sure many players of AC/UO tried Darkfall multiple times throughout it's iterations only to leave shortly after and return to AC/UO. Those games just had/have way more depth and content. Darkfalls only appeal left to players is for those who just want hardcore PvP match ups or to be the top wolf.

    Say Darkfall was in it's prime shape and had the other 1/2 of the recipe implemented realistically you guys would never exceed 5000 - 10000 maximum active subscribers. It can be done but again I've said many times the work required to get the game to this state would be quite substantial.

    Unfortunately they took an outdated game, even when it first released...a game that died on it's own merit and deluded themselves, thinking it could be re released as is and survive.

    It didnt...shocker.

    Now thier drastic changes are just looking more and more garbage by the day.
